Brand Spotlight: Basra Pearls
This month, Kaamilah Boutique welcomes a new jewelry vendor at its store location. Basra Pearls, is owned and operated by Toronto-based Sajeda Khan. We sat down with this Muslimah entrepreneur, as she shared her inspirations and motivations behind starting her own brand.
What was your inspiration for starting Basra Pearls?For years, I wanted to start my own business but due to family commitments, I was unable to do so. At this point, I feel, is the right moment for me to launch BASRA PEARLS. I come form the 'Land of Pearls', Hyderabad, India, and I would love to share my passion for unique and original pearl jewelry with the rest of the community.
How is Basra Pearls different from other brands in the same business category? Do you have something unique to offer?
Basra pearls is unique in that we offer authentic, fresh water pearls. I design my own contemporary styles to suit our target audience - teenagers, middle-aged women and seniors. The best part about pearl jewelry is that it suits any age group, and makes every woman look and feel elegant about herself. Pearls have not been sold in such styles before, with a traditional yet contemporary touch. Our Pearl Bridal Collections will soon be displayed at our Kaamilah Bridal Event, May 2015.
What have been some of the challenges that you faced while setting up shop?
A primary challenge when initiating a business on our own is rental payments. Marketing and doing business solitarily also poses its own difficulties. Kaamilah has this amazing factor of committing to and promoting businesses jointly. It is an amazing concept of a mini-departmental store, and a great example of an upscale designer boutique.In the future, I would love to see my pearl jewelry be shared among Muslim fashion bloggers who promote Islamic fashion in a mix of traditional and contemporary styles.
